As Superintendent Bernard Taylor leaves next week, the Kansas City School District and attorney Kathy Walter-Mack also are parting ways on June 30.
Walter-Mack is on her second stint with the district after (in her words) a "sabbatical" imposed by former Superintendent Benjamin Demps. Walter-Mack arguably knew the desegregation case as well as any attorney or federal judge! And she was the go-to-person for many folks in and around the district with some often saying she was the real power at the district.
But she was also controversial because of her alliances and strong personality. Demps axed her in part because he thought she was too close to attorney Clinton Adams Jr. But Walter-Mack and Adams had a falling out after she staunchly backed Taylor before he was sacked last fall.
KC Buzz Blog wishes her well and wonders what other top administators at the district are next after Taylor and Walter-Mack in heading for the exit ramp?
