The ol' McCaskill mill now a billboard for...Jim Talent

Announce_1 On Aug. 30 last year, Claire McCaskill launched her U.S. Senate campaign from the steps of the old McCaskill & Son feed mill in Houston, Mo. The main idea was to emphasize that this time she was going hard after rural voters.

That was where her father, William, once worked in the first years of McCaskill's life. It was at a pond just behind the barn where McCaskill's father taught her how to fish.

And yes, McCaskill told the crowd that day, Dad insisted that she tear the worm in half herself.

For that day, the campaign had the old barn painted with a fresh coat of red paint.

The red paint is still there. But so is something else -- a series of campaign signs for McCaskill's rival for the U.S. Senate, Jim Talent.

Political blogger John Combest today posted a fresh photo of the mill on his website. (Houston Police confirmed its accuracy).

Steve Drake, who owns the mill, said he's a Talent backer ("because of the conservative issues: abortion and guns"). Talent's campaign hung the signs with his permission, he said.

AND ONE MORE THING:

Drake said Tuesday afternoon that he gave the McCaskill campaign permission to stage their kickoff at the mill. At the time, he said, he had no plans to post Talent for Senate signs on the mill following the event.

But, he added, the Talent campaign called not long afterward to ask if they could post some signs. "I said I didn't care," Drake said.

But the campaign didn't show up with the signs, he said, until about a month ago. Asked if Talent aides were attempting to embarrass McCaskill on her home turf, Drake demurred.

"I've got no idea," he said.

The Bush/Talent frat boy approach to politics and government. How clever -- if your idea of heaven is a kegger!

Hey Kraske, when are you guys going to actually start covering this race? I heard you allege on KCUR today that you cover politics "for a living." Still waiting for a sign that you actually COVER it. So far it looks like you and Helling just get spoonfed by Combest, the Wichita Eagle, the Post-Dispatch, and now the San Franciso Chronicle.

Oh, and you probably ought to point out that Combest is a Republican blogger. But of course doing that would require you to engage in actual journalism.

What is that suppose to mean? frat boy approach? Kegger?

Talent is not very popular here in Pulaski County.

Talent Voted Against Commission Recommendations; GOP Commission Chair Gives Congress Failing Grades on Implementation
http://www.dscc.org/news/roundup/20060918_talent/

When it comes to balancing the need for tight security with safeguarding civil liberties, Talent and McCaskill lean in different directions.

Talent has strongly backed the Bush administration's controversial surveillance and detention policies. If anything, he says, lawmakers have fretted too much about preserving certain rights.

"Congress in particular focuses so much time and effort on worrying about how we're treating the terrorists," Talent said. "I'm concerned that Congress hasn't always focused enough on defeating the terrorists. ... To the extent the terrorists are successful, it threatens all of our liberties."

McCaskill says Congress has looked the other way while the White House has overreached. Lawmakers need to provide more rigorous oversight, she said, and make sure the White House isn't trampling on fundamental American protections.

"We are the beacon of the world for democracy because we have a strong Constitution. Now is not the time to abandon it," McCaskill said.

I agree with Claire. We don't need to trample on our constitution. Someone Tell Talent to stop urinating on it. GO CLAIRE

Please, please, please kick Evans off this site. ... I should have known he was from Pulaski County.

I posted this on the Monday open forum but I want to post it again for ya'll

Do we REAL conservatives in MO have a clue who the people are we are electing? It is like we just listen to the first suburban corrupt church leader's choice for candidate and say "Yes, let's put this guy up for election."

Although we do have these million dollar firms running our elections, and sometimes winning, we should think about the people we put in Jeff. Almost every metropolitan self proclaimed "republican" representative or senator is known at the Capital as a complete dumba##. All they do is take one for this governor (who isn't even a real republican)and threaten our community leaders; many of whom are real missouri conservatives!

Will the REAL republicans please stand up so that we can write you in this november?

Get Em, I said I was from Pulaski County. I know K.C. Metro area probably better than you. I get around a lot. Home is where I hang my hat. I'm sure that you have seen my work in many places all over K.C. and Metro Area. You won't find too many Blues joints I haven't played Guitar and sang in. And yes I do have a voice. What is it I have brought to your attention that you dont like.
I agree with Goldwater. The Republicans I see running things are not Conservative Republicans. They are Authoritarians.

au·thor·i·tar·i·an Pronunciation (-thôr-târ-n, -thr-, ô-thôr-, ô-thr-)
adj.
1. Characterized by or favoring absolute obedience to authority, as against individual freedom: an authoritarian regime.
2. Of, relating to, or expecting unquestioning obedience. See Synonyms at dictatorial.

The corporate control of the Political Body in this country is out of control. I see a resemblence if not actual shape of a Fascist Regime being installed. The media is polluted with propaganda. I'm sure it has always been there but now it is oozing out of every Major Network. They were sound asleep until Katrina
hit.

Senator Arlen Specter, the Pennsylvania Republican who is the panel’s chairman, described as “inexplicable” a provision in the bill that would strip federal court of jurisdiction over detainees not formally charged with war crimes.

“If the courts are not open to decide constitutional issues, how is constitutionality going to be tested?’’ he asked.

How good is that? The McCaskill campaign PAYS for the old McCaskill & Son feed store to be painted, only to see it turn to such a beautiful sight for the Talent campaign! I don't remember seeing anything this good since the Antlers at MU managed to get tiger paw logos on the KU bus!
Whoever on the Talent staff can take credit for this (and whoever tipped off media outside of the Houston, MO area)...thanks! I have new wallpaper for my computer.

Tommy don't think I need you to tell me much about anything for you are not too hip on what is happening in your own country. You should worry more about understanding the foundation and principles our country was founded upon then my spelling. Like checks and balances. Does that mean any thing. You are a follower of an Authoritarian leader. This means you blindly follow your leader out of a sense of duty. You need to be told what to do rather than make your own decision. The president knows best mentality. The reason I say this is your reluctance to face facts. Instead you continue to use the retoric and talking points instilled by those you blindly follow. They have led you astray my friend. I will pray for you right wingers.

Hey Tommy, serious question -- why would you vote for Talent? I mean, in all honesty, how do you sell the guy to someone else, on his own merits? (I'm assuming that it's not just "because he's not McCaskill," who actually seems to be a pretty good candidate on her own merits)

Thanks in advance.

CRD,
To be fair to Tommy. Why would you vote for Claire?
I haven't decided yet, why don't you convince me.
No Talent bashing.

I have strong beliefs about agriculture's importance in the Show-Me State, so I point out how Jim Talent has helped Missouri agriculture:
*succeessfully setting the renewable fuels standard higher than anyone had ever proposed
*using common sense to see that Country of Origin Labeling would place an unfair burden on producers and the marketplace
*letting the marketplace decide about an animal identification program instead of making it mandatory
*working with the agriculture community to develop more value added programs
*understanding the international trade arena and its importance to Missouri (and US) producers
*support of ethanol and biodiesel
*support of agriculture research, extension and education
*moving commodities through humanitarian aid
*pushing for modernization of locks and dams on the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers
*understanding the importance of the Missouri River; opposing the spring rise
*extension of the 2002 Farm Bill until after a WTO agreement can be reached
*working WITH Senator Bond
*elimination of the estate "death" tax...death shouldn't be a taxable event
*I also don't agree with Claire's positions she has taken with the Farmers Union and R-CALF USA. If she's embracing the ideals of a handful of people (vs. Missouri's major ag organizations and commodity groups), I can't relate to her.
***
I have other "selling points/concerns" that I also share with people who want to listen...escalating health care and insurance costs, support of our military, transportation infrastructure, being tough on criminals, workfare. There have been a minimum amount of times that Jim Talent and I have not agreed.
I value Jim's Christian beliefs and appreciate the fact that he and I have talked openly about our faith. I saw the example of his faithfulness when he took and ailing friend to the side and prayed for him...not for show, but because he sincerely wanted to pray for this individual and believes in the power of prayer. I appreciate the fact that Jim has told me he's fasted and prayed while in Congress.
Jim has always taken the time to extend hospitality to me and my family; he listens to my kids and asks them about what's going on in their lives. I've known Kit Bond a lot longer and he's never done that...his office staff has always been considerate, quick in their response and professional. I feel like the people you surround/staff yourself with are reflective of your own character.
***
I know I'll be accused of spelling out "talking points" by those who favor Claire...but CRD asked how I sell the guy...

Annonymous at 10:27pm (aka John Evans)--
I think you've misread me...I am informed. I just prefer to not use the liberal standards that you prefer.
I am not "following the leader"...I am supporting the person who Americans voted as President of the United States and the Senators and Congressmen Missourians voted to represent them. Do I always agree with their decisions? No. Would they always endorse my decisions. Probably not. I'm working with the set of checks and balances put in place just like everyone else. Yes, there are checks and balances...last I knew, we still had the 3 branches of government still in place.
I have not been led astray. I've very familiar with where I am, where I've been (raised a democrat...converted after Carter's grain embargo and then under Reagan) and where I'm going. Thanks for your concern, though...and I do appreciate the prayers. Have you taken the time to pray for President Bush, our Senators and Congressmen?
About the spelling...after noticing more than a few posts with their spelled 'thier' I just had to pass the mw.com site along...and then when you defined Authoritarian, it was just too good not to poke a little more fun your way. Lighten up and take another blood pressure pill before you have a myocardial infarction (that means heart attack...I'll save you a trip back to mw)

Tommy,
Excellent posts.
Can the Claire supporters top that without bashing Talent?

Tommy--great job, thank you for that work..

and Brenda--good job on pic..it definitely brought a smile to my face...

OK, Craig, I'll rise to the challenge. I strongly support McCaskill because:

* Missouri needs a common-sense leader in the Senate who will ask the administration the tough questions that need to be asked about Iraq and the war on terror.

* We need a leader on agriculture who will support small farmers rather than the corporate farms. COOL is a prime example of a program that would benefit U.S. farmers by ensuring that food shoppers could "buy American" with food, just like they can with clothes. Corporate farms and food conglomerates oppose it because they want to keep sneaking in cheaper produce from overseas.

* We need a Senator who understands that protecting agriculture and our rural communities is about more than looking out for the interests of the major ag groups which primarily represent corporate producers and not family farmers. The "death tax" affects CEOs, not family farmers.

* We need a voice who will speak out for US on health care and try to find solutions, rather than just blaming the poor and cutting funding needed programs without first trying to fix them.

* We need a leader who will fight to protect Social Security and who will oppose Bush's privatization plan.

* We need a Senator who will demand an investigation into higher gas prices.

* We need a Senator who will push for tax cuts to help families buy a first home and send their kids to college, rather than just give more money to the wealthy.

* We need a Senator who will work to expand renewable fuels and who will fight handouts to Big Oil.

* We need a Senator who understands that supporting our troops doesn't end after you send them into battle. They need to be properly equipped, and they need to be taken care of when they come home by fully funding VA healthcare and expanding access to higher education.

* We need a Senator who knows that stopping illegal immigration is about more than a big fence. We have to crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants or they'll just make taller ladders.

* We need a Senator who supports raising the minimum wage.

* And, we need a Senator who is not afraid to speak out on important issues and who won't shrink when asked a tough question.

Those are all positive reasons to vote for McCaskill. But I think it's also both important and necessary to draw contrasts between Talent and McCaskill on two important issues: Independence and Courage of Convictions.

* Independence: McCaskill challenged the governor of her own party. The state party actively worked against her primary campaign in 2004, but she ran anyway. Her audits of both Carnahan and Holden were tough but fair, just as she's been with Blunt. Meanwhile, Talent has posted a record of voting with Bush 94% of the time. That's not a slam on Talent, it's reality. If you support Bush, you should see it as an plus. So voters can either support a candidate with a record of challenging her party or the candidate who nearly always votes the party line.

* Courage of Convictions: Some of McCaskill's recent statements have been open to criticism, but you can't accuse her of not speaking her mind. The lady has guts. Talent on the other hand refuses to take a position on important issues like stem cell and the minimum wage. Again, this isn't a slam on Talent, it's reality. It's no secret that he tends to duck controversy, while McCaskill's not afraid to stir it up.

Most importantly, Missouri needs a strong voice on our side. Say what you want about McCaskill, but she has moxie and courage. Just imagine a hearing with Donald Rumsfeld, who do you think will ask the tougher questions: Claire McCaskill or Jim Talent? And if you agree that tough questions need to be asked, then I think the choice this fall is very easy. Go Claire!

The only fear I have with Ms McCaskill is that as soon as she gets elected, she will forget the rural part of Mo. Right now she is acting like just one of us when she is here and we know that isn't true. The thing I don't trust or like about her is that two years ago she didn't need us. Now we are needed very badly for her to win.Reminds me too much of a Clinton that got elected. Say what the people want to hear where you are at the time!
When she gets to Washington and with the big wheels......Goodbye rural Mo.

Here's what I noted about Claire at the Missouri State Fair, obviously looking for rural votes...90+ degrees in Sedalia (as usual) and Claire is wearing a business suit (don't give me that "trying to look professional line, either--Gov Blunt and Senator Bond weren't in their suits). Do you call that trying to fit in? How about ordering a hamburger 'medium rare'* at the Beef House (that's how everybody eats them, she said). She isn't thinking through some of her decisions and she's trying too hard to think she's fitting in.
*ground beef should always be cooked to an internal temperature of 160...medium rare is 130-140 and won't kill e coli.

Just wanted to add this comment. The person that owns the mill can let anyone put a campaign sign there. Maybe Ms McCaskill took a long time to pay them for repainting it and putting that name on it. Could be their payback for slow check writing in the McCaskill campaign. That is, if the same person still owns it,as did when it was repainted.
By the way, I don't know who owns it. Just my opinion.

another talent gimmick...only this time I am going to\
ruin him for voting against the updated iraq armor
funds...
TALENT LETS IRAQ SOLDIERS DOWN...
i was in iraq and I know about the bulletproof vests taht
we needed that talent voted against...why did he vote
against money to upgrade body armor for us in iraq..
what a scam...what a disaster...what a liar talent is.

Sometimes bills get voted against because other things are put in that they know will kill the whole bill and make certain people look bad for voting against it. Did you look at the whole bill and what was in it. Ask Mr Talent yourself why he voted against it. Then if you still feel the same way at least you will know why.
I also have a son in Iraq and want him to be safe and come home. I do hope that you made it back and were not injured while over there.

Hey Vet, thank you for your service. Iraq is also enough of an issue for me. Anyone who not only votes to support this insane invasion (it's not a war, we invaded a country) but then also votes against taking care of our soldiers and our vets does not get my vote.

Talent has consistently voted against veterans. This is shameful. He supports the oil and gas industry and helps line the pockets of big pharma but refuses to take care of our vets. Shows where his messed up priorities are.

I am not a big fan of Claire but she at least will take care of our vets. So she gets my vote.

Hey, Mad: I personally spent $1,500 to buy my son his body armor when he served in Iraq. Other than my problems with the total lack of planning involved iin the Iraq war, I have another problem with the "conservative supporters of our troops".

There never was any "shortage" of armor. It was available on the civilian market. Otherwise I couldn't have bought and shipped it to my son when hiis government failed him. It was all a lie.

Then, Rummy claimed that the up-armor for the Humvees was short because the suppliers couldn't build it faster. The CEOs of both suppliers called press conferences the next day to call him on that lie.

So what was the result? All of the self-proclaimed, troop supporting, "conservatives" blamed the media for outing Rummy! No demand for his resignation. No demand for real support of our troops. Nothing. Just blame the press.

How many of our troops have died because this Administration and Congress refuse to fully support our troops, we will never know. But how many of our troops deaths should we accept in the name of "cost effective warfare".

I am sick and tired of those I see as "bumper magnet warriors" (no bumper stickers please, their support isn't strong enough to risk marring the finish). Those that are all for the war and our troops but are willing to sacrifice nothing, pay for nothing, and unwilling to even incovenience themselves for the troops they claim to "support".

New Republican slogn, "War without cost. War without incovenience. War without sacrifice."

Shame on you all.

From LarrytheScrabbleGuy-"* We need a leader on agriculture who will support small farmers rather than the corporate farms. COOL is a prime example of a program that would benefit U.S. farmers by ensuring that food shoppers could "buy American" with food, just like they can with clothes. Corporate farms and food conglomerates oppose it because they want to keep sneaking in cheaper produce from overseas."

Talent supports all forms of farming, because all forms of farming are vital to this state. Don't give me the crap of "Talent only supports corporate farms", cause it just doesn't hold water.

"* We need a voice who will speak out for US on health care and try to find solutions, rather than just blaming the poor and cutting funding needed programs without first trying to fix them."

Talent has repeatedly submitted a bill that opens the way for Association Health Plans, which could greatly reduce the number of uninsured Americans if passed. It has repeatedly been held up by Democrats in the Senate who are afraid of letting Republican's get credit for something good. They are more interested in that than they are in doing something good for the people of America.

"* We need a leader who will fight to protect Social Security and who will oppose Bush's privatization plan."

Why don't you just say "We need someone who will fight for the status quo and just let Social Security go broke"? At least Bush is offering a plan, which is a lot more than we can say for Democrats.

"* We need a Senator who will demand an investigation into higher gas prices."

Um, have you been to a pump lately? Oh, I know, you are probably one of those who guarantee that prices will start climbing back up to $3 a gallon right after the election, right?

"* We need a Senator who will push for tax cuts to help families buy a first home and send their kids to college, rather than just give more money to the wealthy."

More misinformation. The tax cuts did help the rich more because, well, they were paying more than the rest of us! Duh! But everyone, including myself (and I'm far from rich), received tax relief.

"* We need a Senator who will work to expand renewable fuels and who will fight handouts to Big Oil."

Senator Talent pushed renewable fuel standards to the highest that anyone before him had ever requested, and was successful.

"* We need a Senator who supports raising the minimum wage."

Why, so they can hurt the economy? I know all those zit faced 16 year olds at McDonalds will be mad at me, but an increase in the minimum wage is not needed.

"Those are all positive reasons to vote for McCaskill. But I think it's also both important and necessary to draw contrasts between Talent and McCaskill on two important issues: Independence and Courage of Convictions."

And you think McCaskill will be doing anything more than what her party leaders tell her to do? They are pouring over $6 million into her campaign, and won't settle for less than a rubberstamp to their policies.

"Meanwhile, Talent has posted a record of voting with Bush 94% of the time. That's not a slam on Talent, it's reality. If you support Bush, you should see it as an plus."

I personally see it as a plus, but it still begs the question: Exactly what bills have Talent and Bush both voted on? Last I knew, the President does not have a vote in the Senate, so how exactly do you people get this number? Sounds to me like Democratic talking points that noone actually knows the answer to.

"Say what you want about McCaskill, but she has moxie and courage. Just imagine a hearing with Donald Rumsfeld, who do you think will ask the tougher questions: Claire McCaskill or Jim Talent?"

Yeah, imagine a Senate hearing with President Bush, when she again calls him a racist killer. I'm sure that will really raise the level of dialogue!

Claire McCaskill is a complete nut job. Her campaign is unraveling as we type. She's going to get trounced this November, and will be working for a St. Louis law firm by next spring.

Michael: McCaskill is a "nut case" as compaired to who and what? John ("cover up that dirty statue") Ashcroft? Dick ("We not only know that Saddam has weapons of mass destruction, we know where they are") Cheney? Donald ("the manufacturers of the armor aren't capable of making it any faster") Rumsfield? The list goes on and on.

Or maybe, if you a "right" minded, lieing and incompetant national leaders are a plus.

Rural Voter: As far as your "sometimes there are other things in bills..." comment goes, what did you say about the smear Rove and Bush developed around "I did vote for it before I voted against it"? Did you work to point out that this was part of a much longer statement, that, if actually listened to, was an indictment of Bush for failing to propose a means to actuyally PAY for the war?

Or the Bush claim in the debates that Kerry had "voted against" millitary appropriations an incredible number of times? Did you point out to people that these were procedural votes that make no difference toward the eventual passing of the bill.

Since every person in Congress can be smeared in the same way. Are you going to defend all of them? Or just the right wingers?

I'm not defending anyone in congress.I was just making a statement that sometimes the bills that they try to pass are filled with so much pork barrel junk that they don't get passed for that reason. I agree if they would just pass what is needed would be great, but everyone of them wants to look like the big cheese that got it passed and it goes in file 13.

Tommy, Are you seriously suggesting that people not vote for Claire because she likes her burgers medium rare?

I am a huge believer in a political philosphy called TATBO. The philosophy is quite simple. It goes like this:

In order to overcome the undue influence of lobbiests and big campaign donors, it is necessary to get away from having a permanent political class. It is necessary to return to "citizen legislators" as the founding fathers intended.

Doing this is simple. Before going to the polls, sit down and ask yourself, "Do I approve of what government has done since the last time I voted?"

If the answer is "yes", then go to the poolls and vote for the encumbents.

If the answer is "no", go to the polls and vote against ALL encumbents.

Pay no attention to party affiliation, corporate sponsorship, claims of religion or the various smear campaigns that are sure to be launched. Just for for government as it is or vote for change.

Simple ain't it?

And that is where the organization's name come from, TATBO. It an acronym stating the belief that most are disapproving of what government is doing. Hence the acronym:

Throw All The (Bums) Out! TATBO!

If we TATBO enough times, we will weed out the slugs that sell their souls for political power and, hopefully, return to a truly representative government.

This election. Every election. Throw All The (Bums) Out!

Big Al--
I'm not suggesting Missourians not vote for McCaskill because she orders her burgers medium rare...I just cited that as an example of how she think's she trying to fit in (ordering a burger medium rare around a bunch of Missouri Cattlemen cowboys, like it was a "tough" thing to do). While I know folks who do eat their burgers medium rare, I don't suggest it...use the USDA guidelines of cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

Was at the Flea Market last week. Medium rare is pretty much the only way to go, to my mind.

I think you're reading waaaaay too much into it, Tommy.

All I want to know is, When is Claire going to release those financial records she seems so intent on keeping hidden?

I don't like my meat burnt. And I don't think I should have to eat it that way just becauuse some Jack-In-The-Box in some other State didn't clean their equipment properly.

50 BILLION MISSING IN IRAQ

-DO YOU KNOW WHAT CHECKS AND BALANCE MEANS?

-PLEASE HELP THIS COUNTRY

-VOTE FOR CLAIRE MCCASKIL.

ONE LOVE. INDEPENDENT AND PROUD.

Go JIM! Claire has been a failure in Missouri. We shouldn't send her to the Senate to be an embarrassment for the country to see.

I don't think I'm reading too much into this...the cattlemen and cattlewomen who were there could only laugh at Claire ordering a hamburger medium rare. To them, it was a complete turn-off and they cited it as an example that she was trying to relate, but couldn't.
(It has long been a tradition for politicians to come to the Beef House at the Missouri State Fair and cook STEAKS...I think Claire had her wires crossed and decided to flip a few burgers, then ordered hers medium rare...BTW, you can't serve a hamburger at a public restaurant at the Missouri State Fair without cooking it properly.)
I'm not a member of the cattlemen, but I enjoyed and laughed at the story when they told it to me.

Quoting from September/October issue of "Show Me" Missouri Farm Bureau Magaxine:
Letter from CHarles Kruse, President:

"I an extremely disappointed with however, that Talaent's oppoonent, CLaire McCaskill chose not to attend the interview meeting. She also refuesed to fill out the questionaire asking her to state her position on the issues. It is sadly ironic that during the same week Ms. McCaskill is quoted as making a special effort to reach out to rural Missouri that she would dismiss the importance of meeting with the states larges organization of farmers and ranchers."

Yes, it takes intelligence and pure GENIOUS to affix your Talent signs to anything already tagged with a McCaskill sign. Was Rove behind this? I mean, this is political brilliance. Pack up your bage, Democrats, these Republics have got it in the bag.
