Former Jackson County Prosecutor Albert Riederer confirmed this morning that he's running for mayor. That makes it an even dozen - candidates, that is.
Riederer said in December that the timing wasn't right for a city campaign. But now he says people -- corporate types -- urged him, over the Christmas holidays, to reconsider.
So he's jumping in. He says he thinks he brings fresh perspective to City Hall and can continue the economic development momentum Kay Barnes started.
Riederer's senior advisor will be Richard Martin, who managed Claire McCaskill's Senate campaign. And Jackson County Legislator Scott Burnett is also helping.
Riederer plans to file papers to launch his campaign this week and hopes to file nominating petitions mid-month. He said he knows he's getting into the race late, but already has more fund-raising commitments than he'd expected.

Both Albert and Scott Burnett remind me of "Mr. Lupner" on early Saturday Night Live episodes. Remember the Lupners? Jane Curtin played Mrs. Lupner, Gilda Radner was her daughter, and Bill Murray played Todd the boyfriend. My favorite line was Mrs. Lupner explaining what happened to her husband: "Poor Mr. Lupner, he was born without a spine."
Yeah, I'm sure those "fund raising commitments" came pouring in right after close political allies Shields and Cardarella got indicted.

Riederer is no threat to anyone. He will soak up some votes, but they were all going to Shields anyway. All those county people are like the little cliques in high school, they trade allegiance among themselves. Right now the county et al are under a very discerning mircroscope and we bloggers and the majority out in the community are not going to let ourselves be burned again by the likes of their crowd.
Sanders has a lot of history to rewrite about those politicos. We here in the city are not going to easily fall into those quagmires.

EGO. That is exactly the word for Mr. Riederer getting back into the now even dozen. Anyone for a baker's dozen?
It's on, it's off..this won't be the last time Albert changes his mind. Is this the person we want running our city. Proof positive that others are the "geppetto to his pinocchio."

The Mayors job isnt one you chose after your top goal was county legislator, and then back out of that . Your reasons are a little suspect Albert. Oh I bet this has Boss Nutter in a spin whether to back Big AL or Glover.

Rich Martin is a great, sharp guy. Too bad, he's lying down with Little Albert.

Richard IS a great, sharp guy. I doubt he would get involved with Riederer unless he thought he would make great mayor.

How can he bring a fresh perspective to city hall and at the same time keep up the same policies of the current mayor and her crowd?
I am really surprised that someone of the stature of Martin would get involved with Riederer after the success of Claire.
