Good. I hated that idea.

freeelections

GREAT - I was hoping this would happen. I had a hard time getting my birth certificate for my drivers' license spending over $60 to get an ORIGINAL birth certificate from Germany even though I had my US ISSUED MILITARY ID the stupid DMV wouldn't take it, so I can see how someone who didn't have that kind of money would just give up and therefore not be allowed to vote.

Yeah, the GOP loses in a 6-1 ruling, and Slow-kuh has the nerve to say Democrats were the ones who were "desperate"? Does he even believe his own drivel?

The Real Jimbo

This is a victory for democracy. The judge's held the facts to the law and made the right decision. These judges are not activists. Rather, they are simply interpretting the constitution.

craig

Now that this has been ruled on by the Supreme Court, could we get a bi-partisan group of legislatures to hammer out a comprimise? If anyone thinks that the concept of having to show a picture I.D to vote is a bad idea then they really need to look at the fact that there is a real problem with voter fraud in our country and our state. That being said, there has to be a way to write a law that takes into account all exceptions, or have an election panel to review exceptions to make this a reality. I am waiting to see if the Republicans can eventually write a comprimising peice of legislation and if they will have any support from the Democrats when writing it.

Dirtyron

If people must have IDs to vote, then only legitamate citizens will vote. Why contribute to a corrupt process. If people really want to vote, they will get their IDs.

LMAO

"a victory for Missouri voters." Elections, she added, can't be fair "if eligible voters are not allowed to vote."

Can't be fair when you have illegal immigrants voting either. Wonder how those seniors get on airplanes, purchase alcohol, or tobacco?

libswinagain

Yeah, some way to uphold fair elections. The votes of all real citizens can be ruled out by illegals and anyone else the liberals happen to dig up and put on the voter rolls! Democrats can't win with their ideas so they have to find some way to abuse the current system. What is going on in this country?!!!

deegee

I don't suppose there could be a fair, unbiased, nonpartisan way to solve this problem? Nahhh...

Hello, McFly

If the poor and elderly have so much trouble getting down to get an ID, just how the heck are they supposed to get to the polling place?

Why protect the process, when we can keep it full of loopholes and easily circumvented?

KC Cicero

Actually, there is not a "real problem" with voter fraud -- at least not the kind involving persons voting who are not who they say they are. The experts in the area give a number of @200 nationwide -- out of 200 million potential voters. Literally one in a million! to guard against that, the Voter ID bills would risk barring 20 million legitimate voters from the polls -- just because the don't have the right TYPE of ID, not because they aren't who they say they are.

Of course, the danger of stealing an election by rigging the computers is another matter, and one the Repubs don't seem to mind.

craig

KC Cicero,
If you recall, somewhere between 25-50% of the registrations submitted by ACORN were "suspect" and at least 3 were from dead people. Now I know no crook ever gets caught the first time they break the law, and nobody is perfect enough to find every illegal act. That being said, what do you think would be a reasonable comprimise to this dilimna?

Engawyer

GOOD FOR THE MISSOURI SUPREME COURT. IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT A CITIZEN CAN PROVE RESIDENCY IN COURT THROUGH BROADER MEANS AND SUE ANOTHER PRIVATE CITIZEN FOR THE SHIRT ON HIS BACK, BUT BE FORCED TO COME UP WITH A DRIVER'S LICENSE TO EXCERSICE HIS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO VOTE.

WHAT DOES THE GOP THINK THERE ARE MASSES OF OUT-OF-STATE POOR OR BLACK DEMOCRATIC VOTERS TRAVELING GREAT DISTANCES TO CAST A BALLOT IN MISSOURI?

WHY ON EARTH THEN WOULD THEY PROMOTE THIS LAW. WELL IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT IT IS SIMPLY TO DISENFRANCHISE WOULD-BE VOTERS.

THE REAL PROBLEM WITH ELECTION FRAUD, IS THE COUNTLESS NUBMER OF PHANTOM VOTERS DOWN STATE AND IN THE SUBURBS WHO TURN OUT TO VOTE TO THE TUNE OF 95+% EVERY ELECTION.

WITH NO FINGERPRINTING, VIDEOS, OR ABILITY TO SPOT CHECK VOTES, THE SYSTEM IS RIPE FOR ABUSE.

MR. SLOCA, IT IS STUPID TO HURL BASELESS ALLEGATIONS THAT THE DEMOCRATS ARE CHEATING, GIVEN THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE LOST THE LAST FEW ELECTIONS.

WE ALL KNOW THAT IT IS YOUR PARTY THAT USES NEGATIVE ADDS, HURLS PERSONAL ATTACKS, CHEATS, AND IS PLANNING ON CHEATING AGAIN COME NOVEMBER 7TH.

"THE REAL PROBLEM WITH ELECTION FRAUD, IS THE COUNTLESS NUBMER OF PHANTOM VOTERS DOWN STATE AND IN THE SUBURBS WHO TURN OUT TO VOTE TO THE TUNE OF 95+% EVERY ELECTION."

WOW, that is a borderline racial insult en. What is wrong with showing up to vote? I don't get it. And if you are claiming that the number is due to fraud then you should support the voter ID law.

"WHAT DOES THE GOP THINK THERE ARE MASSES OF OUT-OF-STATE POOR OR BLACK DEMOCRATIC VOTERS TRAVELING GREAT DISTANCES TO CAST A BALLOT IN MISSOURI?"

No, they think that there are left wing groups like ACORN out there that will not let ethical standards or the law stand in their way of getting as many voters out as they can "dead or alive"

"WE ALL KNOW THAT IT IS YOUR PARTY THAT USES NEGATIVE ADDS, HURLS PERSONAL ATTACKS, CHEATS, AND IS PLANNING ON CHEATING AGAIN COME NOVEMBER 7TH. "

C'mon, the mud has been slinging pretty heavy from both sides.

eng, I will give you one comparison, Missouri Basketball.

keith

if they can cash the checks from the government, they can show ID at the polls.

Realist

How did I know the "one" in the "six to one" decision would be named Limbaugh?

plattecohighschooler

Like for friggin real?

milwolf

the Court said that the law only applies to this election , not future elections.

As an election judge, I support Picture ID's because it makes the ID process easier and besides 99% of the voters show a Driver's Licnese anyway.

I am amazed that a picture ID is required to purchase tobacco, alcohol, board an airplane, cash gov't checks ,foodstamps, open a bank account, and use a credit card.
I guess the Judges and Demos think that these requirements are also discriminatory as well. I am weary of hearing about the downtrodden masses who refuse to accept responsibility for themselves !!!!

Old Drum

You have to like comments like this:

If you recall, somewhere between 25-50% of the registrations submitted by ACORN were "suspect" and at least 3 were from dead people.

*****

Actually, I read no report that it was 50%. However, the Board of Elections caught them to begin with. Seems to me the system is working.

Now, it is unfortunate that the flood came at the end, and ACORN screwed up. The question is this. Who was going to cast those votes with those false cards?

For mail in registration, you do need some kind of ID the first time.

Again, what election in Missouri had a fraud problem so big that the election was seriously tainted?

crd

"If anyone thinks that the concept of having to show a picture I.D to vote is a bad idea then they really need to look at the fact that there is a real problem with voter fraud in our country and our state."

There simply hasn't been much evidence of widespread voter fraud -- voter suppression and mishandling of ballots is much more prevalent.

However, that being said, I'm not opposed to photo ids in principle. When people register to vote, give 'em a voting photo id. Simple. Make it part of the process. Don't make it any more onerous than the present system.

Engawyer

WOW, that is a borderline racial insult en. What is wrong with showing up to vote? I don't get it. And if you are claiming that the number is due to fraud then you should support the voter ID law. NO PROBLEM WITH SHOWING UP CRAIG, -JUST POINTING OUT THE INHERENT ABILITY FOR A PRICINCT TO SIMPLY FILL IN A FAKE SIGNATURE FOR ALL OF THE VOTER SLOTS THAT DIDN'T SHOW UP AT 7:00 AND CAST BALLOTS ON THEIR BEHALF. ALL YOU NEED IS FOR ALL THE JUDGES AND OBSERVERS TO BE IN ON IT. I THINK 95%> IS AN ALARMING FIGURE THAT MERITS CONCERN. AND YES THESE UNBELIEVABLY CLOSE TO PERFECT TURN-OUTS HAVE BEEN OCCURING ONLY DOWN-STATE AND IN THE SUBURBS.

No, they think that there are left wing groups like ACORN out there that will not let ethical standards or the law stand in their way of getting as many voters out as they can "dead or alive" OH COME ON CRAIG, ARE THERE NOT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF UN-TAPPED POOR AND BLACK VOTERS IN OUR CITIES? WHY WOULD THEY HAVE TO CHEAT TO COME UP WITH NEW REGISTRANTS? ONE DEAD GUY -BIG DEAL. SOMEBODY GAVE THEM A BOGUS NAME. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY DEAD VOTERS THERE HAVE BEEN NATION WIDE RECENTLY. SHOULDN'T THEY TRY TO GET "AS MANY VOTERS OUT AS THEY CAN? I SUPPORT ACORN. I WOULD SUPPORT A MIRROR OF THE SAME DOWN STATE. WE SHOULD ENDEAVOR TO ACHIEVE 100% TURNOUT.

C'mon, the mud has been slinging pretty heavy from both sides. DUDE YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT DEMOCRATS AND INDEPENDENTS ARE FACING. GIVE ME ONE EXAMPLE OF A NEGATIVE AD BY A DEMOCRAT AND I WILL SHOW YOU TEN BY THE GOP. THEY HAVE USED THIS TACTIC SINCE '94 TO WIN. YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT IT IS FAR MORE LABELING (I.E. LEFTIST, LIBERAL, ETC.) AND PERSONAL SWIFT-BOAT ATTACKS COMING FROM THE GOP AND KARL ROVE (SEE LIMBAUGH, COULTER, HANNITY, ORIELLY, ET AL). OPEN YOUR EYES MY BROTHER. ON THE OTHER SIDE, I ADMIT THAT JOKE TELLING AND 'POOKING FUN AT' SEEMS TO BE THE DOMAIN OF DEMOCRATS AND LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW HOSTS.

I TRUELY BELIEVE THAT IF JOHN KERRY, HILLARY, OR BORAK RECEIVE 70 MILLION IN '08, THE GOP WILL SOMEHOW CLAIM A TURNOUT OF 70.1 MILLION, AND SO FORTH. I BELIEVE THIS, BECAUSE OF AN OBJECTIVE COMPARISON OF PERFORMANCE AND CANDIDATE CREDENTIALS FROM RECENT ELECTIONS.

"MR. SLOCA, IT IS STUPID TO HURL BASELESS ALLEGATIONS THAT THE DEMOCRATS ARE CHEATING, GIVEN THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE LOST THE LAST FEW ELECTIONS."

eng, I will give you one comparison, Missouri Basketball. MISSOURI BASKETBALL WON SOME OF ITS GAMES. THAT SAID, BAD COMPARISON FOR WE REFER TO ELECTION FRAUD. IT WOULD BE ANALOGOUS TO HAVE HIT MIZZOU FOR FIXING SCORES OR INFLUENCING THE SCORE KEEPER DURING THE ACTUAL GAME. THEN YOU COULD SAY SEE MIZZOU FIXED SCORES DURING THE GAME BUT DID NOT WIN (TO WHICH AGAIN I WOULD SAY NONSENSE). HERE (I AM NOT SURE BUT BELIEVE) MIZZOU WAS HIT WITH BOSTER, RECRUITING AND OTHER PRE-GAME VIOLATIONS, THAT IS MORE TANTAMOUNT TO SAY JERRYMANDERING (SIC), OR CAMPAIGN VIOLATIONS NOT AT ISSUE.

THANKS FOR THE RETORT.

ONE LOVE. ONE NATION. NO LABELS.

Mike

Hallelujah! It's about time democracy and civil rights prevailed for a change. It's bad enough that the federal government has pressured the states into requiring birth certificates to renew our drivers licenses. These kinds of things inconvenience (sometimes greatly) the general public, while the few violators that these things are supposed to flush out end up finding yet more ways around them.

The voter ID law was just another tactic by republicans to keep democrats from being able to cast their constitutionally guaranteed vote.

somewhere in the middle

It was a good and proper decision; right up there with the polling tax... mainly aimed at discouraging people to vote disguised as voter reform. Pure and simple, and you know it.
